Boxers have been known to fight in an array of footwear including shoes which are more alike to wrestling boots and even high-spec trainers. It definitely comes down to comfort and personal requirements but there’s no doubt that opting for a specialised ring boot or shoe provides advantages both to your performance and to your safety and protection from injury.
Wrestling boots are specially designed for more grappling and groundwork. They’re flexible and have strong grip but don’t compromise on stability and support for the foot and ankle.
In contrast, boxing boots are more padded around the ankle as the chance of unexpected shock or falls is higher. In wrestling, however, as the stance is low and the fighter is prepared, rigid stability is sacrificed for flexibility.
Wrestling boots may look visually similar to boxing shoes. They’re generally low-top or mid- cut which provides ankle stability and protection to the sole and heel through to the lower calf. This helps to reduce ankle roll or other injuries that could result from stumbling, falling or other impacts. However, wrestling boots generally are lower cut than boxing boots.
Boxing requires an upright stance and as such, high-cut boots aren’t an issue and don’t tend to impede a boxer’s agility, but there are of course exceptions. In wrestling, however, the stance is lower with bent legs and a lot of crouching and lower actions.
The second key feature to a wrestling boot is its grip. Wrestling involves a lot of pushing and pulling from sharp angles where the legs are tilted, making grip is crucial for aiding the fighter in gripping the mat or ring at angles not seen in boxing.
Wrestling boots often feature wrap-around specialist grips to suit the fighting style and the tread can be harsher and thicker than that of a boxing boot.
Again, boxing requires a more upright stance whereas wrestling is lower and crouched. Whilst the ankle needs some support, wrestling boots may be made from more flexible softer material than a boxing boot which can be constructed from thicker leather or PVU plastic.
Thinner soles mean greater sensitivity to the ring which is generally preferred by modern wrestlers. This also enhances flexibility and grip, it allows the foot to flex to whichever angle the fighter needs no matter the position he or she finds themselves in. Modern wrestling shoes combine thin soles with strong grips to make a durable shoe with natural tactile sensitivity which suits the modern game.
Advanced technology enhances the flexibility of the boot whilst retaining stability and protection. New materials are also extremely durable and don’t tend to crease, tear or crack when subject to intense pressure during fights or training.
The grips of modern wrestling boots are also optimised for the ring. Tech materials have replaced conventional leather and canvas to make higher-performing combat footwear which grips the mat or ring tightly without sacrificing stability or agility.
Wrestling boots are pretty flexible in their use in that they make excellent training shoes. With ankle support, comfort and flexibility, wrestling boots are great for:
They have thinner grippy soles which improve agility and movement speed, they’re less clunky than trainers which makes them great options for fight drills and other high-tempo workouts.
Wrestling boots are tech sports footwear and you will need to look after them properly to get the most out of them for long periods. They’re extremely durable but you’ll need to put them on properly and lace them up comprehensively - no slacking and just shoving the shoe on! Creased shoes with buckled heels will lose their stability quickly and are more likely to split or tear. To wash wrestling boots, simply wipe them down with a cloth and some light detergent. Avoid washing them, especially at high heats, as this can warp plastic, erode coatings and damage seams. We sell spray-on deodoriser which is ideal for cleaning and freshening up wrestling boots and other sports footwear without the risk of damage.
We stock wrestling boots from many leading sportswear brands such as Adidas, Everlast, Asics, there are plenty to choose from. Modern wrestling boots are built to exceptional standards and no matter the brand, there is something for every level.
