Get pumped! Stay motivated with your boxing routine

17th May 2017

Staying motivated and being consistent with your routine is the key to fitness and success. It’s the best way to meet your goals and build upon your progress with reliable results.

Here’s our top tips and advice to keep motivated.

FOCUS ON GOALS

This gets you from A to B and puts fire in your belly when you think you can’t carry on with your routine or forget why you’re working so hard. If you keep your goals in mind, you’re more likely to see each workout as part of the bigger picture, making it easier to tackle.

If it helps, write them down, even just on your phone, so you can remind yourself at the start of challenging sessions. You can also use visualisation. If you want to win that fight, imagine yourself holding your hand up at the end of the round, being cheered.

PLAN YOUR SCHEDULE

Don’t let ‘I don’t have time’ become a regular thing. Turn your sessions into a habit and then won’t seem optional. The best way to do this is to schedule your time carefully so they become part of the things you simply have to do, whether it’s daily or every other day. In short, be committed and stay committed.

DON’T COMPARE PROGRESS

Following on from this, you have to do it for yourself and no one else. This is why it won’t pay to judge yourself against others and get disheartened if you see someone killing it in the gym when you’re struggling. You’re different and have different bodies, experience and probably goals as well. It’s hard, but it’s a type of mental training that pays off and keeps you motivated.

FIND YOUR WORKOUT PASSION

Don’t do workouts you hate for the sake of it. A lot of times we work out for the results, which is great and necessary, but balance this with your fitness passion, whatever that may be. If you have a favourite exercise, do this more and think about that when you’re debating making your session.

DON’T OVER DO IT

Pushing yourself too far leads to burnout and you guessed it, no motivation to carry on with your boxing routine! You don’t want to end up having to rest just because you didn’t know your limits. Avoid this by building up slowing – one rep at a time – and staying aware of your own strength and skill as it grows.

TRY SOMETHING NEW

When it comes to routines it’s easy to get lost in the repetition and get bored. It’s just a fact of life. When you feel this happening set yourself a new challenge and incorporate a new aspect into your routine. Another good bit of advice is to stick to your routine but then try something that’s been on your bucket list for a while that’s physical. Ever been wall climbing? Muscle building and lots of fun.

TRAIN WITH FRIENDS

Workouts with other people give you someone else to think about and some conversation. It adds variety and working out with different friends at different times further changes the experience. You can also pull each other up and push each other on when you need to. In fact, if you’re lying on bed thinking ‘can i be bothered?’, text your gym pals and see if anyone is up for a session. When you get a ‘yes’, you’ll feel accountable to them and get off the bed to train!

GIVE YOURSELF REWARDS

To be serious for a moment, the biggest rewards are the results and knowing you’ve put in the work and it’s all paying off. When we say give yourself rewards we mean set up a system to keep you motivated as you work. If you reach a milestone, you get something back like new gym gear, a new punchbag, whatever it is you want. Even a cheat meal! This helps your mind see you’re routine in stages and break it up into manageable chunks so you stay passionate and focuses.
