What you need to box in the amateur season
Amateur competition in England runs under England Boxing rules, and the equipment is not optional. You will need:
- Approved competition gloves in your corner colour, red or blue, at 10oz or 12oz depending on your weight category. We stock the Sting Competition Approved Gloves II and Adidas IBA gloves; see amateur competition gloves.
- An approved head guard in matching corner colour where your age group requires one. The Sting Competition Approved Headguard II is here, with more in amateur competition head guards.
- Vest and shorts in red and blue. Sting Mettle and Adidas Base Punch II are the club standards, with junior sizes in the Sting Mettle range; see ring wear vests and ring wear shorts.
- Hand wraps that meet competition rules: Adidas ABA approved wraps in 2.5m and 4.5m and Sting elasticised wraps in 3m and 4.5m, all in boxing hand wraps.
- A gum shield from SafeJawz or Opro, plus a groin guard.
Corner colours, glove weights and what the rules say
Gloves and head guards for amateur bouts must carry the approval mark the governing body recognises, and officials check them before the boxer steps through the ropes. Depending on the show, they may be supplied by the host club or brought by the boxer, so clubs need approved sets in both colours ringside and boxers should check with their coach. Corner colours are drawn, not chosen, which is why the sensible purchase is a red and a blue of everything the rules require in a colour.
Buying for a club squad
Clubs need approved gloves in red and blue at both weights, matching head guards in a spread of sizes, and spare gum shields and wraps for the boxer who turns up without. We hold competition stock through the season, so you are not waiting on a factory order the week of a show. Call 01708 320320 with your list and we will confirm stock and sizes in one delivery. Complete red and blue outfits are in boxing ring wear sets. Our staff work the corner at amateur shows, so they know what the equipment check involves.
Frequently asked questions
What gloves are used in amateur boxing in England?
England Boxing bouts use approved competition gloves in 10oz or 12oz, with the weight decided by the boxer's weight category. They are red or blue to match the corner and carry a licensed maker's approval mark; Sting and Adidas are the two we supply.
Do I need both red and blue kit for amateur boxing?
Yes, or be able to borrow it. Corners are allocated on the night, so a boxer who only owns a red vest will eventually be drawn blue. Most club boxers buy a vest and shorts in each colour and keep both in the bag.
Can I use my sparring gloves in an amateur bout?
No. Sparring gloves are 14oz to 16oz with softer padding and no approval mark, so they will fail the equipment check. Competition needs an approved 10oz or 12oz glove in the corner colour; keep sparring gloves for the gym.
