Training shorts or ring shorts?
Training shorts are cut for movement over long sessions: lightweight polyester or jersey, a wide elasticated waistband and a length that clears the knee so you can sit into your stance. The Adidas Base Punch and Pro Box Club Essentials shorts are typical club kit; Boxfit jog and sweat shorts suit gym work and roadwork. Ring shorts, or boxing trunks, are satin with a high, wide waistband that marks the belt line for the referee and a fuller cut that moves with you. Sizing and fit
Boxing shorts are sized by waist and most brands run to their usual clothing sizes. Satin ring shorts should sit at or above the navel with the waistband snug enough to stay put through a full bout; if you are between sizes, go up, because a fuller leg is never a problem in the ring. Women's cuts and skorts are in women's boxing shorts, and junior sizes from Be First and BXF are in kids boxing shorts.

What is the difference between boxing shorts and boxing trunks?
Nothing beyond the name. Trunks is the older term, and in the UK it usually means satin ring shorts with a high waistband, while shorts covers both those and the polyester training shorts you wear in the gym.
Why do boxing shorts have such a high waistband?
The waistband marks the belt line. Under the rules, punches landing below it are low blows, so a high, clearly visible waistband gives the referee a reference and gives you a little more protected area. It also keeps the shorts in place without a drawstring.
