Punch Bags
A punch bag is the centrepiece of any boxing set-up, and Boxfit UK stocks 214 of them: hanging heavy bags, free standing bags, water bags, uppercut bags, kick bags and body opponent bags from Tuf Wear, Ringside, Rival, Carbon Claw, Century and Cleto Reyes, from under £16. We have supplied punch bags to home boxers and clubs across the UK since 2006 and will help you choose the right one.
Hanging or free standing punch bag?
A hanging punch bag is what you will find in every boxing club. It swings, so you learn to move and time your shots, and it takes full-power punches for years. You need a ceiling joist, a wall bracket or a frame to hang it from; all three are in our brackets, frames and fixings range. A free standing punch bag sits on a base you fill with water or sand, needs no drilling and can be moved out of the way, which suits flats, rented homes and shared spaces. It gives less resistance than a hanging bag, so if you have the fixing, hang one.
Punch bag weight and height
Height is about what you want to hit. A 3ft bag suits juniors and low ceilings. A 4ft bag is the all-round standard for boxing. Go to 5ft or 6ft if you kick or want to work low targets; see our kickboxing and Muay Thai bags. Weight sets how much the bag moves. A rough guide is a bag around half your bodyweight: 20 to 30kg for lighter boxers and speed work, 40 to 60kg for power punching and heavier users. Our heavy duty punch bags go up to jumbo weights for clubs and hard hitters.
Filled or unfilled, leather or PU?
A filled bag arrives ready to hang, packed to the correct density at the factory. An unfilled bag is cheaper to buy and ship, and you fill it yourself with tightly packed rags or textile offcuts. Do not use sand alone; it settles to the bottom and turns rock hard. Leather bags from Cleto Reyes, Pro Box and Ringside last longest and are the choice for busy gyms. PU and canvas bags from Tuf Wear, Carbon Claw and Lonsdale cost less and hold up well at home. If you want a bag that feels like hitting a body rather than a sack, look at water punch bags, which absorb impact without jarring your wrists.
Why buy your punch bag from Boxfit UK
We are boxing specialists, not a general fitness retailer, and our staff hang, fill and hit the bags we sell. Order online for express UK delivery, or compare bags in our Romford store before you spend. We stock the chains, swivels and hooks to go with it, and the bag mitts and gloves you need to hit it safely. Ring 01708 320320 (option 3) if you are unsure which suits your space.
Frequently asked questions
What weight punch bag should I buy?
Aim for roughly half your bodyweight. A 70kg boxer gets good feedback from a 30 to 40kg bag; heavier or more powerful punchers want 50kg and above. Too light and it swings wildly; too heavy and it punishes your wrists.
Is a free standing punch bag as good as a hanging one?
For fitness, technique and home use, yes. For heavy power work, a hanging bag wins because it absorbs more force and moves more realistically. Free standing bags are the right call when you cannot fix anything to the ceiling or wall.
Should I buy a filled or unfilled punch bag?
Buy filled if you want the correct density straight out of the box and are happy to pay a little more for delivery. Buy unfilled if you are on a budget and can pack it yourself with rags and textiles. Either way, pair it with proper bag gloves and hand wraps.
