Whether you're a parent or club looking to stock kit or equipment for your members, it's important to consider key features of boxing boots for kids and to ensure you pick the right boots to increase their training potential.
All of our stock has been chosen because the designs, quality and performance are perfect for younger boxers. Aside from colours and picking the correct shoe size, here are some of the core elements to consider as you make your choice:
Boxing boots are absolutely crucial for all junior boxers alike. Junior boxing boots are one of the first bits of kit that any budding boxer or martial artist should own. They don’t just improve speed, agility and stability, they’re also absolutely pivotal in protecting the feet and ankles.
As a sport of quick footwork and fast, agile movements, boxing can strain on the ankle and foot which bear the brunt of various jolts and other harsh movements. Adding to this, since movement in boxing is often unpredictable and reactionary, the ankle may not always be in the best position for stability and can be prone to twists and sprains.
Boxing boots help mitigate the stress boxing places on the ankle to shield from injury. Junior boxing boots are as important as boxing boots for adults; they can improve both boxing performance while enhancing safety considerably. Ankle sprains are nasty and can take weeks to heal, they can damage confidence and delay training regimes and programmes - grabbing some quality boots is one of the best ways of combating this risk.
Boxing boots, like many other sports shoes, are made from performance materials which provide strength combined with flexibility, breathability and shock resistance. They often have hard-moulded plastic bases combined with tech fabrics which wick moisture away from the foot.
They also have unique treads explicitly designed for the ring. These treads are fine-grooved for extra grip on smooth gym floors or boxing rings, They’re certainly not intended for outdoor use or use on other rough surfaces. The tread may wrap around the outside too to provide an extra dimension of grip for slide or on toe movements.
Boxers are fortunate in that there is an incredible variety of boots to pick from nowadays and it's no different for junior boxers. Whilst kids may have preferences to certain brands, colours or looks, perhaps the biggest consideration is whether they want a low-top, mid-top or high-top. So, what's the difference?
Low-top boxing boots are more like typical trainers than anything else. Trainers are typically cut below the ankle which provides maximum flexibility, breathability and a full range of movement at the ankle. The downside of this is that the low-top compromises ankle support, and as we’ve said, ankle support is extremely important in boxing.
Low-top shoes are great for cardio sessions, but for any serious training or sparring, it’s best to jump to mid-top kids boxing boots.
Mid-top shoes cut just above the ankle usually covering the ankle in padded or otherwise semi-flexible material. Mid-top shoes are probably the most common in boxing, the mid-top shields the ankle from blows but crucially, it helps prevent the ankle rolling or if it does roll, it helps prevent it rolling to the point of injury or sprain.
Mid-top shoes don’t tend to be much heavier than low-top shoes and they barely compromise agility, they’ve definitely become the most popular type of shoe for many boxers in pro fights or training or fitness regimes.
High-top boots and shoes have a nostalgic, vintage to them and are incredibly popular in boxing, as well as basketball, helping to support feet and ankles for ultra-fast and unpredictable movements.
High-top shoes provide super-strong ankle stability which makes them great choices for long training sessions or the injury-prone who suffer ankle sprains easily.
Boxing boots are relatively easy to take care of. They certainly get sweaty and scuffed but overall as they are not generally worn outside of the gym and ring, cleaning them is a simple process.
There's spray-on cleaner and deodoriser which can be used to freshen up boxing boots quickly. If you do want to put them in the washing machine, be sure to check brand advice and always avoid washing at high heats as this can denature or warp plastics or even damage seams.
When putting the boot on, be careful not to collapse the back or sides as this can damage the stability of the shoe and negatively affect its protective qualities.
Junior boxing boots are made by most of the brands you'll known and love from adult boxing boots, which many of the designs available in kid's sizes.
