Why invest in a freestanding punch bag?

Punch bags are fantastic pieces of fitness equipment which are extremely useful for cardio workouts and boxing punch training. For boxers, punch bags are vital for improving power, accuracy, endurance as well as your fitness.

Freestanding punch bags are used in many non-boxing fitness regimes and cross-sport training sessions. They benefit sportsperson with the perfect mix of:

  • a full-body workout
  • burning fat while building muscle
  • improving coordination

They also provide an excellent reference of how it feels to punch a fellow boxer and how different punches affect a hefty weight at different velocities and angles, at the same time as being a fantastic alternative to traditional punch bags.

Punch bags can be very heavy, often weighing in at around 40 kg. It’s often difficult to suspend a weight like that from the ceiling. There are tons of stories around of people attaching punch bags to their ceilings or even wooden beams or similar just for them to tear the walls down. An 80 kg to 100 kg weight is one thing, but as soon as it gets rocking violently from side to side, the forces are enormous.

The solution is freestanding punch bags; they are much easier to install, simpler to transport and can be moved from home gym to pop-up fitness sessions, schools or clubs. As a result, they are multi-purpose and provide great value for money in a relatively short amount of time.

Installation benefits include:

  • No drilling
  • No hanging
  • No fixed location

Whilst non-hanging bags are also:

  • Lighter to post
  • Great for cardio

Most commonly, freestanding punch bags come complete with bases that are either filled with water or sand for stability as you workout.

Size and weight

As stated, the vast majority of freestanding punch bags come on bases which need to be filled with sand or water before use. By placing the bulk of weight at the bottom of the bag, it is held upright while also providing some recoil like a traditional punch bag. This also keeps the weight during postage at a minimum as the bases do not come filled for delivery.

Due to the fact freestanding bags are designed for use with heavy bases for stability, it often means the bag itself is much lighter. This is their primary differentiation to hanging bags where the weight is contained within the bag itself, making it a much sturdier object to punch. The weight of a freestanding bag is suitable for most people, especially if cardio is the focus.

Still, if you’re firing off punches like Tyson Fury then you’ll demolish most cheap freestanding bags. If you’re a heavy puncher or plan to kick box etc, then you need to opt for the heavier bags, of which we stock a high quality range.

For more information on choosing the right punching bags for your needs and aims, please see our guide on the different types of punch bags.

Adjustable heights

Some freestanding bags come with adjustable heights so the bag can be positioned optimally for shorter or taller individuals. This is pretty convenient and also increases the portability of the bag but at a cost of durability. The metal neck required to make a bag adjustable can be fragile and thus, adjustable height bags are generally unsuitable for trained boxers or martial artists or for otherwise heavy hitters. However, for cardio workouts, they’re great.

Overall, for serious training, freestanding bags which maintain the same thickness of bag from the top all the way to the base improve durability, while also maximising the target area. This adjustable height is important for martial arts and combat sports that involve strikes below the belt, e.g. kickboxing.

How to care for your freestanding bag

Freestanding bags are durable by nature and thus, caring for them is fairly straightforward. The bag shouldn't break with use and cleaning the outside is easy; simply wipe it down with a light detergent suitable for the fabric, whether that's leather or a synthetic material.

If your bag is damaged, e.g. the metal neck breaks on an adjustable bag, then don’t persist with it - this could cause injury. Instead, look to find a replacement, get it repaired, or buy a new one.

What is the best freestanding punch bag?

Freestanding bags are made by many sports brands ranging from sportswear household names like Nike and Adidas to boxing’s most famous brands like Everlast and Lonsdale. There are many smaller manufacturers of pro-level freestanding bags too, like Century, who provide probably the best freestanding bag around, the Century Wavemaster 2XL Pro.

How much is a punching bag?

You can spend smaller amounts in the region of £100 for budget freestanding punch bags, which is an excellent choice for those looking for a piece of impressive cardio equipment on a budget.

Pro bags can go the distance in taking heavy punch after punch and because of their design and durability, they do cost more. You can spend £350 upwards on pro bags designed for high grade, commercial use and they really are worth the investment if you're in it for the long term.
